UFC 136 Fight Card Result: Who Should Frankie Edgar Worry About Most?

Adam OsterkampOct 8, 2011

At UFC 136 Frankie Edgar showed perhaps the largest display of heart and determination when he went head-to-head with Gray Maynard.

In an amazing fight, Edgar came back from the brink of defeat to not only win against Maynard, but to actually TKO “The Bully.” It was awesome.

After this event it seems that the sky is the limit for Edgar. With a division that is absolutely stacked with impressive fighters, who is the biggest threat to Edgar’s title?

There are quite a few fighters that could throw their hat in the ring for title contention. Certainly the winner of Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson deserves a shot at the title, but are either one of them the biggest threat to Edgar?

Anthony Pettis is another fighter who could claim that he deserves a shot at the title. He was, after all, the WEC lightweight champion before the two organizations merged.

Then there is Gilbert Melendez, the former Strikeforce lightweight champion who has recently come over to the UFC. Many fans are saying he deserves a title shot right off the bat.

All of these fighters deserve a shot at Edgar’s belt. They each contain a skill set that would surely challenge Edgar.

Out of all of these fighters at lightweight, though, Melendez is the man who posses the most threatening skill set to Edgar’s crown.

Melendez has a very well-rounded set of skills. His only two losses have been avenged. He has great striking, the ability to go the distance and a brown belt in BJJ.

A fight between Edgar and Melendez would be a great match for the UFC to make.

But perhaps the fighter who is most equipped to stop Edgar isn’t currently at lightweight. I am, of course, talking about Jose Aldo.

Jose Aldo is a very skilled fighter and really has a lot of potential to do so much more in the sport. There has been a lot of talk about Aldo moving up to lightweight. If he does, he should get the title shot right away.

There are so many people at lightweight that absolutely deserve a title shot, but Aldo is the man who is the biggest threat to Edgar’s belt.
