I Got $1,000 On Manny Pacquiao
When I was about 14 years old back in 1993 there was a controversial breakthrough in science with cloning. A scientist somewhere successfully cloned the first sheep. I remember this vividly because my ignorant racist teacher made the whole class write a paper on the pros and cons of cloning and the altering of one's genetics and DNA.
This teacher who we'll call "Mrs. G." for now said probably the most F'd up thing a teacher can say to a student. She turned to me and said, you should write a paper about the pros of cloning for the only way any Asians would be able to compete in any sports would be if they some how genetically enhanced their genes with those of Caucasian genes.
She then went on to further insult me by saying well can you name even one Asian athlete or sports star in any sport?
Can you believe this?
That my so called teacher was this ignorant and racist to actually say all this to my face? I don't know about you but to me that kind of talk was awfully similar to another man's theories who's name was Adolf Hitler.
You have to keep in mind this was back in the Midwest in the early '90s. A lot of my friends who had the pleasure of growing up in such greatly diverse and multicultured areas such as Southern California would never have to deal with this type of ignorance and racism that I had to deal with on a daily basis growing up in the Midwest and from my freaking teacher of all places!
So I of course swallowed my pride and did not let her ignorance phase me because I already knew at the age of 14 that I was already on a whole different level than she would ever be.
Fast forward to 2008 and we are living in rather different times. All the "Mrs. G"'s of the world can no longer say that Asians need to have some wack genetic transplant surgery anymore. All the "Mrs. G's" of the world can no longer say can you even name one Asian athlete or one Asian Sports Super Star?
We are now living in times where a Yao Ming gets more love and votes to play in the All Star Game than Shaq does. We are living in times where Ichiro Suzuki is the franchise up in Seattle, We are living in times where the current number one ranked pound for pound boxer on the planet is Filipino.
Manny Pacquiao, the Pac Man, the Destroyer, is literally a GOD in his home country the Philippines. Back home, he is hands down, the most famous and wealthiest person, pretty good for a guy who for years was homeless living in a cardboard box with his brother while dreaming to someday make it as a boxer.
But another amazing accomplishment that many overlook is that it is because of boxers like Manny Pacquiao that the sport of boxing is even alive these days. Yes boxing, my favorite sport, has been on the severe decline for years. Many people turn their backs on boxing complaining that its too boring not enough action, excitement or lack of superstars.
The average person would not even know how to judge a round properly so they long for obvious knockdowns, TKO's, KO's. They want to see toe to toe action not dancers or runners with no power. Manny knows this and that's why he's always been a crowd pleaser and has won over so many fans not just the Filipinos or Asians, anyone who's a TRUE fight fan gives Manny the love and respect that he so deserves.
With each fight it seems he is improving significantly from his defense to using not only his money left hand but his right hand as well. He has tremendous speed and power. It is quite a mystery where exactly does all that power come from seeing that Manny is not a big guy by pretty much any standard.
Some have pointed out that his power comes from his uniquely shaped calves others claim its just speed = power, others claim he's just heavy handed. Regardless of the origin of Manny's power the fans love it. They love the way he fights and the way he wins convincingly in an exciting often destroying manner hence the nick name the Destroyer.
So again back to the horrible teachers that influenced me to realize that I am who I am and that I am on a whole different level on so many different levels and that no one not even an ignorant racist teacher could "teach" me to feel inferior to her.
That is why throwing down a couple hundred dollars on a nice throwback Yao Ming jersey or throwback Ichiro jersey is nothing to me. That's why throwing down hundreds on a ringside seat to the last five Pacquiao fights is nothing to me. That's why I got a $1,000.00 on Pacquiao.
