NFL Predictions Week 5: 3 Defenses that Carry Their Teams to Victory

Michael MillOct 8, 2011

The NFL has transformed from a league with tough defenses and power running games to a new breed of high flying aerial assaults.

Despite this, there are still a few teams that rely on the old school methods to win football games.

Actually, some of those teams may not be who you would expect.

Here are three teams who will walk away with wins this weekend thanks to their defensive play.

Cincinnati Bengals

It was only in 2009 when the Bengals went to the playoffs thanks to terrific play by their defense.

They may not be a playoff caliber team this season, but the defense looks like it's back on track after struggling last year.

They are allowing the fewest amount of yards per game in the league and are only giving up an average of 18.5 points.

This weekend the Bengals take on the Jaguars, who have been putrid on offense.

The Jaguars are the worst scoring offense in the league, averaging just 9.8 points per game.

This won't be a high scoring game, but the Bengals defense will get the job done and lead the team to victory.

Tennessee Titans

Nobody is talking about the Tennessee Titans.

Matt Hasselbeck is the fourth rated quarterback in terms of passer rating. Chris Johnson is kicking it into gear after a slow start due in part to his holdout.

What's most impressive, is the Titans lead leading defense allowing just 14.0 points per game.

It's that defense that has the Titans sitting at a 3-1 record with a legitimate shot at the playoffs in a weakened division.

This weekend the Titans take on Pittsburgh, who has been inconsistent and sputtering.

Remember how the Ravens defense manhandled the Steelers in Week 1? This could be more of the same.

Detroit Lions

Who would have thought that the Detroit Lions would kick off the season 4-0?

Who would have thought that they would go 5-0? It's a real possibility with the matchup against the Bears coming up on Monday night.

The Lions success has come primarily due to the ability for Matthew Stafford to finally stay healthy. He has led the team to the second best scoring offense in the league.

What's been unnoticed about this team, is that they are actually eighth in scoring defense, allowing just 19.0 points per game.

This is a very good defensive front. The Bears have a pretty poor offensive front.

See where I'm going with this?

Expect to see Jay Cutler under duress all game long. The Lions will force turnovers and come out on top in Monday Night Football.

Time to give the Lions a little respect.
