Oklahoma vs. Texas: Is Mack Brown on Hot Seat After Embarrassing Loss?

Ian BergOct 8, 2011

Mack Brown has been a great part of Texas tradition and has taken the program back to a national level in his tenure with the Longhorns. At this point, however, the question has to be asked if Brown has found his way to the hot seat with this loss.

Brown led the Longhorns to a national title game just two years ago but followed that performance with a 5-7 record. This year the Longhorns looked to be overcoming their obvious quarterback woes, as they had made it undefeated and to a 4-0 record so far this season. Then came today’s game against Oklahoma.

The Longhorns look to have returned to their 2010 likeness.

Brown has been at Texas since the 1998 season and is 136-34 since taking the position. Brown knows how to win and has consistently had his team among the nation’s elite.

There does come a time, however, that every college team must see that the patterns that are being developed are not the ones that are winning ball games. Texas may be fast approaching that point. It’s not that Brown isn’t a great college mind or that Texas will fire him today, but this has to be on the minds of the masses.

Not only did Texas have a terribly embarrassing year last season, but this year they looked to returning to elite status. Going into the game ranked No. 11 and facing one of the top teams in the country undefeated had to give the Texas faithful a vote of confidence prior to kickoff.

In this game the Longhorns have not only looked out played, but they have consistently looked out of position. Oklahoma has a wealth of athletes to pull from, but so does Texas. Texas has looked extremely inefficient on offense and defense. Texas’ offense has been giving one gift after another to the Sooners.

The one thing that Mack Brown does have in his favor is that the Texas team does still have a wealth of talent. Brown knows how to build good football teams and knows how to develop talent, but the past few years has to lead to questions about whether he is losing the edge in Texas.

It is apparent that Texas has issues, but the lack of execution of the most simple tasks has to be a concern. Mack Brown is likely not going anywhere, but the seat is warming up. He has one of the highest salaries in college football, but the Longhorns haven’t gotten their $5 million worth of performance lately.

If Texas isn’t able to finish with at least a nine-win season, there may be a curtain call on Brown. The Longhorns still have to face Oklahoma State next week then play a host of ranked teams to finish the season. How they finish after this embarrassment will go a long way in determining the security of Mack Brown.
