Week 5 Start Em Sit Em: Aaron Rodgers and 3 QBs That Guarantee You Victory

Mike ChiariOct 8, 2011

With passing attempts and yardage at an all-time high in the NFL, quarterback play is absolutely paramount. The same can be said for fantasy football as quarterbacks seem to have overtaken running backs as the most integral piece of a team.

While running backs are still important, quarterbacks tend to be the most consistent and highest-scoring players on fantasy rosters. With that in mind, having an elite signal caller gives you a distinct advantage when it comes to succeeding in fantasy.

Here are three top-flight passers that will essentially guarantee you victory if they are in your lineup in Week 5.

Philip Rivers—San Diego Chargers

Although 1,286 yards through four games is nothing to sneeze at, San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has thrown just five touchdowns thus far; however, you get the feeling that he is going to explode sooner rather than later. Week 5 seems like a strong possibility against the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos have struggled to defend the pass this season, particularly last week when Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers torched them for over 400 yards and four passing touchdowns, as well as two rushing scores.

Running back Ryan Mathews has run well over the past couple weeks, so it certainly takes some pressure off Rivers and the passing game. Denver's defense is still in flux under new head coach John Fox, so they are vulnerable to the big play, and that is precisely what Rivers provides.

Michael Vick—Philadelphia Eagles

The 2011 season hasn't gotten off to an ideal start for the Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Michael Vick, but they will be eager to rectify their 1-3 beginning on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Although the Eagles lost again last week, Vick was excellent in throwing for over 400 yards.

Buffalo has been surprisingly good at 3-1, but defense certainly hasn't been its strong suit. The Bills' defense ranks 25th in the league against both the run and the pass which could prove costly against a dual-threat quarterback like Vick.

Vick's biggest problem has been injuries as he has left two games early. Much of that has to do with a porous offensive line, but the Bills rank last in the league in sacks, so Vick should have more time than he is accustomed to. Because of that, he should have a huge day through the air and on the ground.

Aaron Rodgers—Green Bay Packers

It is quickly becoming apparent that Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be the NFL's best signal caller for years to come. While he is currently step-for-step with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, there is no fantasy quarterback I would rather own than Rodgers.

Rodgers showed what he is capable of last week when he became the first player in NFL history to throw for over 400 yards, pass for four touchdowns and run for two more in a single game. Rodgers is so dominant that it seems as if he is capable of leading the Packers into the end zone any time he desires.

In the Atlanta Falcons, Rodgers has a fantastic matchup this weekend that he should be able to exploit. The Falcons have struggled mightily against the pass this season and Sunday night's game figures to be a shootout. With both teams going back and forth, Rodgers figures to be in for a monster night that could see him surpass 400 yards once again.
