Brett Favre: Jealous Favre Can't Backpedal from Aaron Rodgers Diss

Kyle VassaloOct 8, 2011

Brett Favre is unsuccessfully trying to backpedal after trivializing Aaron Rodgers accomplishments. Favre suggested Rodgers was the product of a good situation and he was surprised it took him so long to come away with a Super Bowl.

Now Favre is trying to say that the quote was taken out of context and blaming the media for the way this has been spun.

According to Pro Football Talk, Favre says that he was, "Very gracious and complimentary of the Packers and Aaron Rodgers.”

Here is a snippet from the Washington Post of the comments he shelled out on 790 The Zone in Atlanta about Rodgers and the Packers. You can judge for yourself how "gracious and complimentary" they are.

"

I'm going to be honest, I was not surprised. The biggest surprise to me would be that he didn't do it sooner.

"

Rodgers came in and eventually drove Favre out of Green Bay. Favre and Rodgers don't exactly have a mentor/pupil relationship and every once in a while we see Favre's jealousy and hostility surface.

This is one of those times. I'm going to be honest, I'm not surprised Favre credited Rodgers accomplishments to the team and the situation. The biggest surprise to me would be that he is trying to backpedal from his clearly backhanded compliment.

Either Favre needs to bury the animosity or he needs to be accountable for what he says. Rodgers took the high road, but Clay Matthews went into greater detail about how Rodgers may be feeling, saying,

"

I’m sure Aaron has a bigger problem than with me. Obviously, I didn’t play with Brett at the time. He’s a fantastic athlete and what he did for this organization, but with backhanded comments like that, I’m sure it hits a chord with Aaron. He’s a competitor and he takes everything that people say about him and the criticisms and puts it on display on Sunday.

"

Favre is a Packers legend and rather than continuing to distance himself from what the organization has become and trying to discount Rodgers' accomplishments, he should embrace the team and be proud of the franchise.

The public isn't buying his backpedaling. His inability to keep his jealousy in check doesn't make him any less of an icon in the eyes of Packers fans, but it's certainly creating a void between him and the organization.
