UFC 136 Results: Frankie Edgar Will Finally Prevail over Gray Maynard

Michael DixonOct 8, 2011

Tonight's Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard fight for the UFC lightweight championship is a bit unpredictable, to say the least. Edgar, the current champion, enters the fight as the slight favorite, but nothing more than that. The last fight for each man came on New Years Day, which ended in a draw. Edgar retained the title.

The only other blemish on Edgar's record came more than three years ago, when Maynard beat him in a decision. Maynard is undefeated, with the January draw being the only blemish on his record.

Tonight, Edgar will finally break through, retaining his title and putting his inability to beat Maynard in the rear-view mirror.

Given the history of both men, you would have to say that this one will go the distance. Neither man is prone to winning most of their fights by knockout or submission.

Ultimately, this fight can certainly go either way. My feeling pretty much goes along with Bodog in that Edgar is only a slight favorite. But what makes me gives the edge to Edgar is that neither man is likely to end it early. Considering that, I'll go with the reigning champion.

Since the only loss that either man has suffered was Edgar's to Maynard, it's hard to really say how either does in rematches. They both obviously do well enough in all fights.

But remember that, in a draw, the champion retains the title. Actually, if it goes to decision, the odds are pretty good that the champion will win. Unless the fight is so one-sided that the loser was lucky to even get it to a decision, the judges to tend to lean towards the man who entered with the belt.

So, the fact that neither man is prone to knocking their opponent out, or being knocked out, makes me give a clear edge to the champion. The champions are always better able to come in and fight at their own style.

An upset would only be a minor one, but the slight edge goes to Edgar, the champion.
