Week 5 College Football Picks: Virginia Tech Will Fall out of Top 25 After Loss

Michael MillOct 8, 2011

Virginia Tech was handed one of the top rankings in college football to kick off the season.

Since that time, they have done nothing to prove that they deserve the spot.

After four weeks, the Hokies were sitting at a 4-0 record and a ranking of No. 11 in the nation. Did they really do anything to deserve it?

Virginia Tech beat Appalachian State, Marshall, Arkansas State and East Carolina. There were no teams with any prestigious value early in their schedule.

The Hokies nearly lost the game against East Carolina, which they needed to put together a fourth-quarter comeback to come out on top, 17-10.

Then in Week 5, they faced their first real opponent.

The Clemson Tigers traveled to Blacksburg, Va. and pummeled the Hokies, 23-3.

This Virginia Tech team has proved that they can play defense. Although their opponents haven't been the toughest, 12.6 points allowed per game is still a feat worth mentioning.

However, the offense has done nothing to prove they can hang with even average teams.

It doesn't matter how great a defense is if the offense can't even put up the 12.6 points per game needed to beat their opponent.

This week, the Miami Hurricanes travel to Lane Stadium for an ACC showdown.

The Hurricanes have been extremely inconsistent, and will likely end the season outside of the Top 25. They have sparks of brilliance, but also fall apart against teams they should beat.

That said, they will expose Virginia Tech this weekend.

The win may not be overly convincing, but it will be enough to justify the idea that Virginia Tech is nothing more than an average team in college football.
