England vs. Montenegro: Wayne Rooney Ruins England with Red Card Travesty

Gabe ZaldivarOct 7, 2011

England are into Euro 2012 after drawing with Montenegro. What should be a time for celebration is ruined by a ridiculous act by Wayne Rooney, a hero who is enjoying villain status currently.

The English forward has enjoyed the highest of height in the last couple months. In both international and domestic duties, Rooney has been amazing. He even garnered high praise from Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson when Fergie related his play to Pele's.

On Friday, England was playing in a tight match with Montenegro. The Three Lions needed at the very least a draw to move on to the Euro 2012 competition.

A win seemed to be in hand despite spirited play by Montenegro. At the 73rd minute, England enjoyed a 2-1 lead. That is when Rooney boiled over in a deplorable act that will have lasting consequences.

Rooney was embroiled in a physical battle with Miodrag Dzudovic, which is when the forward kicked out, leaving the referee no choice but to give him straight red.

Down a man, England succumbed to a passionate Montenegro side. In the 90th minute, Milorad Pekovic crossed a perfect ball into the box that was headed in by Andrija Delibasic.

The celebration that should have been English was trumpeted by Montenegro that drew with the international power.

Supporters are left to wonder what went wrong with Rooney. He is sure to miss at least one match in the Euro 2012 next summer, a tournament that demands a club at full strength in every match to survive.

We do have this very ominous tweet to consider, which should be taken with a great deal of salt.

Rooney was said to be poised by teammates ahead of the Montenegro match. I seriously doubt that his father's recent arrest would have played into his violent act.

It is one thing to be emotional, but it is far different to premeditate and act like that in front of your team and country.

The sad note for England supporters is that they will be without one of the best players in the world to start a trying tournament.

With Rooney, they have a dangerous attack that teams must account for. Without him, they are in danger of being sent off as quickly as Rooney was on Friday.
