Auburn vs. Arkansas: Why Michael Dyer Will Win a Heisman Before Tyler Wilson

Johnathan CaceOct 7, 2011

Michael Dyer and Tyler Wilson are two of the best young players in the SEC and that is a feat within itself.

Dyer is averaging over 110 yards per game on the ground and is the major reason why Auburn is 3-1 and not 1-3.

Wilson has stepped seamlessly into the quarterback position following Ryan Mallett’s departure, averaging 303 yards through the air per game. His 510 yards last week is the only reason why the Hogs were able to beat Texas A&M.

But in terms of the Heisman, the clear advantage has to go to Dyer.

Neither player is in serious contention for the trophy unless one of the players ups their yards per game and leads their team to an undefeated record. That is unlikely though, because neither team has played LSU. Also, players like Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson are in stronger contention for the award and have easier schedules, especially Luck.

Assuming Dyer and Wilson stay for another year, both should be considered serious candidates for the Heisman.

But the question then becomes what kind of talent they will have around them? Wilson’s top receiver this year, Jarius Wright, as well as Joe Adams and Greg Childs are all seniors but the biggest losses will be on defense. Jake Bequette, Jerry Franklin, Jerico Nelson, Isaac Madison and Tramain Thomas are all seniors as well.

Arkansas has not brought in great recruiting classes either.

Auburn, on the other hand, is one of the youngest teams in college football and Gene Chizik has brought in some outstanding recruiting classes. They should only lose one offensive lineman and just four players on defense.

With so many players leaving from Alabama and LSU at the end of this season, Auburn and Arkansas could both make a serious run at the SEC West title but the odds are squarely with the defending national champions.

In recent years, the Heisman has gone to the best player on the best team and if that trend continues, Michael Dyer should definitely win the trophy over Tyler Wilson.
