NFL Picks Week 5: Which Underdogs Have Golden Chances?

Chris TrapassoOct 7, 2011

If we've learned anything so far from the 2011 NFL season, it's that you can never count a team out of any game, regardless of how deep the hole they've dug themselves into.

Are we bound to see more in Week 5?

Underdogs have shined when we've least expected them to and have mounted some unbelievable comebacks that have re-written the record books.

Here are the underdogs I think have great chances to pull off a victory this weekend.

Buffalo Bills

The 3-1 Bills are three-point underdogs at home against the 1-3 Eagles.

I guess last week's loss to the Bengals gave Buffalo's doubters reason to believe they aren't as good as everyone thought they were.

Still, a three-point underdog at home against a 1-3 club?

The Eagles defense has been thrashed in the second half by the Falcons, Giants and 49ers. They have surrendered leads and are currently down six in turnover differential.

Buffalo's defense hasn't been much better, but their offense plays well at home.

A good chance for an upset in front of the home crowd.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers are seven-point underdogs against the Saints at home.

Sure, the Saints are more talented from top to bottom, and you'd give Drew Brees the nod over Cam Newton.

However, Carolina shouldn't be overlooked in this one.

They have demonstrated the ability to score points against any competition and Newton is the X-factor that can make plays with his arm and his feet.

New Orleans' defense has been susceptible to the big play and hasn't been necessarily stout thus far.

At home, the Panthers have a shot to stun the Saints.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals are three-point underdogs on the road against the Jaguars and are coming off a huge win over the Bills in Week 4.

Their defense is stifling and they should be able to get pressure on rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert, forcing him into a few bad throws.

If they can limit Maurice Jones-Drew—and I think they can—they'll have a fantastic opportunity to win the second game in a row that they entered as underdogs.
