Rex Ryan: Fake Guts, Hall of Fame Blazers, Foot Fetishes and Rex's Best Moments

Zachary D. RymerOct 6, 2011

The NFL was here before Rex Ryan, and it will be here long after Rex Ryan is gone.

But I don't think the league will be the same after Ryan is gone. The head coach of the New York Jets will forever be known for two things: his superior defensive mind, and his wacky antics. And while Ryan's defenses can be fun to behold, they just don't quite hold a candle to the weird things he says and does on a seemingly regular basis.

There are a lot of people that Ryan rubs the wrong way with his actions, but I think we can all agree that he is one of a kind. For that, we should be more quick to celebrate him than we are to scorn him.

In fact, let's celebrate him right now. Here's a quick look at five of Ryan's best moments.

Rex and Tom Brady Are Basically the Same Person

Those who pay any sort of attention to the NFL will know that Ryan has a very complicated relationship with the New England Patriots. He's always made it clear that he respects the Jets' AFC East rivals, but he never shies away from poking some fun at them when he can.

For example, there was that time last November when Ryan boldly proclaimed to a room full of reporters that he has more in common with Tom Brady than they might think. The next thing they knew, Ryan was brandishing a magazine with his wife's picture in it and talking about how he and Brady are both married to supermodels.

Take that, Gisele Bundchen.

Rex Doesn't Think the Preseason is a Joke

Ryan may be an oddly eccentric fellow, but there are times when he loses his temper. I can't use any of the clips from the show here, but those who watched even a single episode of Hard Knocks will know what I'm talking about.

At any rate, there are times when Ryan loses his temper even when the situation doesn't call for it. This was very much the case back in August during a preseason game against the Houston Texans. Ryan appeared to get miffed about not having the right personnel on the field, and he got so angry that he nearly ripped his shirt in half.

Did I mention this was in a preseason game?

Rex Ryan vs. Bill Belichick: An Epic Battle Between Hall of Famers

Will Ryan be a Hall of Fame coach when all is said and done? Probably not. After all, it's not like he's Bill Belichick or anything.

Or is he?

During a news conference on Wednesday, Ryan revealed that he already is a Hall of Famer... at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Belichick, meanwhile, is a Hall of Famer at Wesleyan University.

Apparently, this makes them equals. Or something.

Is That You, Rob Ryan?

Coaching is a big part of the Ryan family legacy. Rex's father, Buddy, used to be a heck of a head coach in his own right. In addition, Rex's twin brother, Rob, has served as a defensive coordinator for several NFL teams.

One of those was the Cleveland Browns. And when the Jets and Browns met up last November, the two Ryan brothers miraculously switched places. Hilarity ensued.

The Foot Fetish Video

At some point last season, Ryan went from being the generally respected, sometimes goofy head coach of the Jets, to being the star of a foot fetish video.

At least, we think he's the star of the above video. He's never confirmed that his voice is the one that you hear in the video. He's also never confirmed that the woman in the video is his wife.

He's also never denied either of these things.

Well, if it's not Rex and Michelle Ryan, it appears that there is a couple out there that does a pretty good job of impersonating them.
