LSU vs Florida: Is This the Last Annual Meeting for These Powerhouses?

Regan GardnerOct 6, 2011

College expansion is again the midweek topic of discussion, as rumors are swirling about the likes of TCU to the Big 12, and Missouri to the SEC.

TCU's addition can only be seen as the Big 12's solution to the anticipated loss of Missouri. After all the SEC cannot stand pat with only 13 teams, and the Big 12 has not exactly been considered stable as of late.

The SEC scheduling a 13-team league can be done, but the idea of it is a ludicrous assessment, especially when the SEC is arguably the strongest football conference in the nation.

If Missouri is not the SEC's 14th team then someone else will be, and very soon at that. Tennessee's new athletic director, Dave Hart, has already admitted as such while stating the conferences intentions of aggressively pursuing options.

When, and not if, the Southeastern Conference does accept a 14th member, then expect realignment of the divisions to occur. Speculation of Auburn's move to the Eastern division has already begun, but what would that do to their rivalries which have become many times televised nationally.

What then becomes of series between inter-divisional rivals such as LSU/Florida? Will it be possible to continue to schedule teams from opposite divisions, at least on an annual basis, with the inclusion of two more teams?

Erin Andrews tweeted as such today while prepping for her spot on ESPN's "College Gameday" going on to say "wouldn't feel like a season w/o that game."

In fact, the Tigers and Gators have played every season since 1971. The matchup has become one of the most anticipated matchups to the college football-loving world. One of the true displays of the SEC's vaunted power and speed, not to mention the fact that they are the BCS's only two two-time national champions.

The thought of not seeing this game every year would be a travesty to fans and viewing audiences alike.

Where would fans be without games like the 2007 bout, in what some have called the greatest college football game ever played?

The epic battle let the world witness Tim Tebow's grittiness and now famous taunting of the ruthless Death Valley student section.

The game also cemented former Tiger Jacob Hester's place in LSU lore, as well as Les Miles' now famous moniker as "the Mad Hatter" with five fourth-down conversions to score the game-winning touchdown.

When the SEC does realign, and the scheduling decisions have to be made, hopefully the schedule makers will do one thing right.

Let the fans of football continue to see the inter-league matchups like LSU and Florida, and the many others to help the world decide which division in the nation's toughest conference is superior.
