Bernard Hopkins vs. Sergio Martinez Could Be Next Fight
Sergio Martinez could soon be stepping into the ring with none other than Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins.
Martinez, (48-2-2, 27 KOs) the current Ring World Middle Champion has just recently defended his title against gritty British fighter Darren Barker via 10th round knockout.
Since then, speculation has grown as to who his next opponents might be.
There was even talk of him moving down in weight to face Manny Pacquiao, but I doubt that would ever come to fruition, mainly due to the size difference.
Step in the grand daddy of all boxers—Hopkins.
Hopkins, (52-5-2-1 NC, 34 KOs) is currently the WBC and Ring World Light Heavyweight Champion. And if that wasn’t enough to whet the appetite, Hopkins, at 46 years, also became the oldest fighter to have ever won a world title when he defeated Jean Pascal nearly five months ago.
Hopkins is slated to fight former WBC and IBF Light Heavyweight Champion Chad Dawson on Oct. 15 in a championship bout.
If Hopkins can get past the younger Dawson come fight night, then there is chance he could be slugging it out with Martinez, but only at a catch weight of 175 pounds.
However, that also depends on whether Martinez is willing to make the jump to said weight, but according to his handlers that’s a no-no.
That being the case, you can never-say-never where boxing is concerned.
In regards to a potential match-up with middleweight king Martinez, this is what Hopkins had to say:
"“I don’t mind fighting anybody that thinks they can bring a challenge to me,” Hopkins said. “But at the end of the day, after I take care of Chad Dawson Oct. 15, anyone that wants to fight me has to fight me for my titles, and that’s the 175 Ring [Magazine] belt, and also the WBC belt.
“So there’s no compromising when it comes to that because I represent the light heavyweight division. I’m 46 years old, four years from being 50. I’m not in the position to give anyone any leeway, because I’m a grandpop. Remember, I’m the grandpop of the business. How can you ask a favor from grandpop?”
"
If the Martinez camp eventually agree to a catch weight of 175 pounds and Hopkins gets past Dawson, who do you think takes this?
