Tiger Woods: Prolific Sponsor Rolex Will Help Tiger Time His Comeback

Andrew KulhaOct 6, 2011

It's seems like it may be the right time for Tiger Woods to officially re-start his comeback, and a new sponsorship deal with watchmaker Rolex is the perfect way to get things going.

It's somewhat scary and sad how quickly Woods has fallen off the map in the sports world, but perhaps this new deal with a prolific sponsor will put him back on track.

Woods' story is well documented and discussed, so there is no reason to re-hash everything that happened.

The fallout with his now ex-wife and the massive cheating scandal was both a personal and professional tragedy.

Not only did his personal life fall apart, but he was left facing the prospect of losing most of his sponsors, and that was something that happened quickly.

Add onto that the pressure of trying to regain his form while dealing with a knee injury, and we witnessed one of the greatest and most prolific collapses in the history of sports.

Woods has gone from the undisputed best golfer in the world to a tabloid headline.

This new sponsorship deal may be a sign that things are picking back up for the former star though. Eurweb.com reports more on the new sponsorship:

"

Reported by the Wall Street Journal, the deal was promoted on the company’s Web site as of early Wednesday evening where Rolex said Woods was joining “the family of Rolex ambassadors” who are chosen for talent, perseverance and passion for the sport.

Financial terms weren’t disclosed, but the Journal said experts believe Rolex got the Woods deal at a discount.

AT&T, Accenture, Gillette and watchmaker Tag Heuer are among the brands that have previously ended their endorsement relationships with Woods. Before the scandal, the golfer made around $90 million a year from his promotional deals and ranked as the most powerful endorsement figure in sports, according to the Journal.

Under the headline “Rolex and Tiger Woods: A Partnership for a New Challenge,” the watch company said on its Web site: “This association pays tribute to the exceptional stature of Tiger Woods and the leading role he plays in forging the sport’s global appeal. It also constitutes a joint commitment to the future.”

The company added: “Rolex is convinced that Tiger Woods still has a long career ahead of him and that he has all the qualities required to continue to mark the history of hold. The brand is committed to accompanying him in his new challenges.”

"

Okay, so Rolex isn't Nike or even close, but there is no doubting that they are a very recognizable brand.

In fact, they may be the most recognizable and highly respected brand of watches there is.

The very fact that a company of this stature has decided to take a risk on Woods may point to something more than we aren't seeing just yet.

They are "convinced that he has a long career ahead of him," and they are "committed to accompanying him in his new challenges".

Challenges are something that Tiger Woods used to thrive off of. Perhaps, this is the dawning of a new time-period for him.

Woods undoubtedly has a long road ahead of him filled with many challenges.

The time just may be right for a legitimate comeback.
