UFC 136: Dana White Gives Thoughts on Edgar-Maynard and Sonnen's Trash Talk

First LastOct 6, 2011

UFC 136 goes down Saturday, and it will feature the third fight between UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and No. 1 contender Gray Maynard.

They fought to a draw in their second bout from UFC 125. Maynard holds a win over Edgar from the first time they met in 2008. Edgar won the title when he defeated B.J. Penn at UFC 112.

UFC president Dana White spoke to Ariel Helwani of MMA Fanhouse about this weekend's card and its competitors.

"

The way you look at it, it is a win [for Edgar]. He's been walking around with the belt since that last fight. He's the champion. He has had all the perks. He's been hanging out with the Philadelphia Eagles and doing all the things a champion does when you got that belt, and Gray has not, so yeah, he's bitter and he's upset and he feels like he should have finished that fight in the first round.

I was going to move on and do another fight, and Gray was so upset, so I said, 'Alright, I'll give you this shot. We'll give it to you now. We'll do this thing.'

I'm actually really looking forward to this fight. I think it's going to be great.

"

In the co-main event, former lightweight title challenger Kenny Florian will fight UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

Aldo is coming off his five-round war with Mark Hominick, while Florian beat Diego Nunes in his 145-pound debut at UFC 131.

"

Regardless of what I say about Kenny Florian in title fights, he's a guy who I have a lot of respect for. He''s an awesome fighter and a guy who has been in this organization for a long time, so he's getting this shot and realistically, it could possibly be his last title shot ever in the UFC.

I never said he [Florian] chokes. It's not about choking. What I said is he doesn't fight the same way in title fights that he does in his regular fights. He's moving forward, he's aggressive, he goes after guys and then when he fights in title fights, he does these run-in-circles things, pushing guys against the fence.

"

The card will also host a middleweight matchup between former title challenger Chael Sonnen and Brian Stann.

Sonnen comes into the bout after a year out of the cage. He also is coming off his loss to Anderson Silva, in a fight he was winning up until he submitted in the fifth round.

Stann comes into the fight on a three-fight win streak with victories over Mike Massenzio, Jorge Santiago and Chris Leben.

"

He's [Sonnen] good to deal with. He's not one of these guys that is difficult to deal with. I'd say the most difficult thing about Chael is when I'll get a call from one of our PR people saying listen to what this guy just said. Most of the time, it's something that is so off the wall and makes absolutely not sense at all.

"

Full interview with Helwani available here.

Other main card bouts include Joe Lauzon vs. Melvin Guillard and Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan.

The PPV will begin at 9:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live from the Toyota Center in Houston, TX.

The undercard will be streamed on Facebook and Spike TV.

Spike TV will broadcast Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago and Anthony Pettis vs. Jeremy Stephens.
