Week 5 Waiver Wire: Steve Breaston and 3 Gambles That Will Pay off

Ryan RudnanskyOct 6, 2011

There's the waiver wire, and then there's the bottom of the barrel.

For you fantasy football owners who have seen your prized pickups stolen away from you by other competitors, there's still hope if your team is ailing.

Here are three gambles owned in less than 50 percent of Yahoo! Sports leagues that will pay off.

3. Michael Crabtree, WR, San Francisco 49ers

Michael Crabtree didn't make many fans when he held out right out of the 2009 NFL draft, and he hasn't made many fans with his play since. However, under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, everybody seems to be playing better.

Crabtree received a team-high nine targets in Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles, catching five balls for 68 yards. This team is utilizing the West Coast offense much better under Harbaugh and it plays to Crabtree's strength: yards after the catch.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers do have a solid secondary, but I expect Crabtree to continue rolling under Harbaugh's system.

2. Randall Cobb, WR, Green Bay Packers

Since an amazing performance in his first game of his NFL career, rookie receiver Randall Cobb has been mainly silent.

However, Cobb did rack up 75 yards receiving in Week 4 against the Denver Broncos and the Packers may find themselves in a shootout if the Atlanta Falcons catch fire.

If the waiver wire has been picked clean, Cobb could have another solid game in Week 5.

1. Steve Breaston, WR, Kansas City Chiefs

Since being brought over to KC to line up opposite star wideout Dwayne Bowe, former Arizona Cardinals receiver Steve Breaston hasn't made much of an impact, in part because of apparent lackluster preparation in the offseason and also the struggles of quarterback Matt Cassel.

However, Cassel got it going against the Minnesota Vikings, and so did Breaston. Breaston caught four balls for 91 yards, showing for the first time why the Chiefs signed him.

The Chiefs face up against the struggling Indianapolis Colts in Week 5, and I think Breaston is going to have another big day.
