Tony Romo: We Must Take Chris Cooley's Word and Stop Looking for Romo Bashers

Michael DixonOct 5, 2011

Some people are just lightning rods. Whether we are praising them or ripping them apart, we all overreact to everything they do.

When the person in question plays quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys and is supposed to be the best man in that position since Troy Aikman, the amount of attention is going to be extremely high.

So, when Romo threw a Week 1 interception that cost his team the opener against the Jets, we reacted like he was the worst quarterback of all time.

When he played hurt and led comeback wins against the Redskins and 49ers, we acted like he was a warrior. Now, we're back to the worst quarterback in the game again, as Romo fell apart at the end of a Week 4 loss to Detroit.

To justify our opinions, we look for insiders. Redskins tight end Chris Cooley originally said that he enjoyed watching Romo choke.

Now, NBC Sports' Mike Florio reports here that Cooley was joking. But who really cares if he wasn't joking?

Cooley plays on the Washington Redskins. That is a division rival of the Dallas Cowboys. Why wouldn't a Redskins' player take pride in seeing Dallas choke?

In the summer, there was a lot of controversy about what Rex Ryan said about his former player Shaun Ellis.

If you don't remember, watch the press conference yourself.

Tell me what's controversial about that. Ryan was actually very complimentary of Ellis. The meanest thing he said is that he didn't want Ellis to play well.

Why would he?

Why would Rex Ryan want someone to play well for his biggest division rival?

Why would Chris Cooley be heartbroken by seeing the Cowboys lose?

In the NFL, the goal of teams and players should be to win. When your opponents are playing well, your chances to win go down. So, why is this controversial?

I don't know why it is. We read too much into things when we're trying to justify certain notions. It's time to get over it.

Joking or not, Cooley's comments weren't close to out of bounds.
