Fantasy Football Week 5 Projections: Forecasting Tim Tebow's Role

Ryan PhillipsOct 5, 2011

Tim Tebow got in for one play in Denver's 49-23 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 4. He rushed off the right side for a loss of one yard and didn't see the field again. Head coach John Fox is clearly not enamored with what the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner can do for him.

This week, don't expect Tebow to see much of the field. He may get in for a few plays in some kind of wildcat-type package, but I'd be shocked if he really made any kind of impact. Fox has clearly shown his preference for a conventional offense led by Kyle Orton. No matter how poorly his starter has played, Fox has stood by his man and he's probably right to do so at this point to avoid a quarterback controversy.

Against the San Diego Chargers in Week 5, Orton will likely be called upon to throw the ball a lot. San Diego boasts the NFL's sixth-ranked defense, allowing just 297.8 yards per game, while the Chargers have the league's seventh-best offense (415.8 yards per game).

Facing them will be Denver's 23rd-ranked defense, which is allowing 377.8 yards per game.

That combination of numbers should tell you that the Broncos are likely to throw the ball a lot, much like they did against the Packers in Week 4. Tons of throwing means that Tebow will likely be stapled to the bench as Orton tries to sling the ball around and get Denver involved in a shootout.

The Chargers are poised for an offensive breakout. If they put up yards and points early, the chances Tebow sees the field decrease dramatically.

If you own Tebow, you'll be better suited looking ahead to Week 7, after the Broncos' Week 6 bye, where there is a slight chance he could take over under-center. Until then, the Florida product is all but worthless in any fantasy league.
