Andy Roddick Et Al: What They Said, Really Meant and Definitely Did Not
Andy Roddick, Andrew Strauss, Samantha Stosur, Kapil Dev and Li Na feature in this edition of "What They Said, Really Meant and Definitely Didn't."
While Andy Roddick is practically speechless at the gall of a Chinese reporter,
Andrew Strauss acknowledges the reality of being the No.1 Test side.
Samantha Stosur is gratified at the honor accorded her,
Kapil Dev has no time for Shoaib Akhtar's "controversial" "Controversially Yours"
and Li Na has her excuses down pat regarding her continued losing streak.
Andy Roddick Loses Match and Composure
1 of 5What he said:
โI think you should retire.โ
Andy Roddick responded to a Chinese journalistโs query as to whether or not he is considering retiring anytime soon.
The question followed his first-roundย lossย to South African Kevin Anderson, 4-6, 5-7, at the China Open in Beijing.
Roddick paused, rolled his eyes, ejaculated his rejoinder and left the interview room.
What he really meant:
โWhat??? A couple of early losses and Iโm toast! Good morning, China!โ
What he definitely didnโt:
โVictory and defeat are two sides of the very same coin. Treat both impostors no different.โ
Andrew Strauss Is Running with the Hares
2 of 5What he said:
โWeโre the hunted rather than the hunters.โ
Andrew Strauss, the English Test skipper, admitsย that his side are fair game for other Test-playing nations since achieving the ICC Test No. 1 ranking. England whitewashed India 4-0 at home to dethrone the current ODI World Cup champions.
What he really meant:
โWe were all chasing Chicken Tikka (Team India) for the past 18 months; now, itโs Fish โNโ Chips (us).โ
What he definitely didnโt:
โWe can hunt with the foxes and run with the hares. Weโre that good.โ
Sam Stosur Is Imprinted for Posterity
3 of 5What she said:
โI think Iโll have to go out and buy a couple of my own stamps.โ
Sam Stosur is inย splitsย as she considers purchasing stamps commemorating her 2011 US Open victory. The special-issue souvenirย sheet was issued by Australia Post, retailing 10*60 cents Southern Cross for AUS $15.95.
Sam added:
โI know Australia has done it in the past with the gold-medal winners, so to have that of myself is pretty cool. Maybe I can post a few letters.โ
Stosur, on the Australia Post website,ย remarked:
"Iโm really excited Australia Post has decided to release a souvenir stamp sheet to celebrate my US Open win. The past couple of weeks have been very exciting and Iโm still coming to terms with the idea of being a Grand Slam winner. This is something Iโll remember forever.
"
What she really meant:
โTrust Australia Post to miss out on complimentary copies.โ
What she definitely didnโt:
โLetter writing? Can anyone recall when they last wrote one? Maybe this will get my fans to switch over to snail mail.โ
Kapil Dev Is in a Funk
4 of 5What he said:
โSpin bowling is an art and so is fast bowling. All artists are crazy and similarly whoever wrote the book for Shoaib is also crazy between his ears.โ
Former Indian skipper, Kapil Dev, is โartisticโ in his denouncement of Shoaib Akhtarโs remarks concerning Sachin Tendulkar in his autobiography, โControversially Yours.โ
The all-rounder was delivering the third Dilip Sardesai Memorial Lecture at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai on September 29, 2011.
What he really meant:
โThe co-author (Anshu Dogra) of Shoaibโs biography is simply nutsโby association.โ
What he definitely didnโt:
โWhat a lot of spin on a fast bowlerโs life story.โ
Li Na Is from Venus
5 of 5What she said:
"Women cannot have the same mentality of men, who expect to win every competition."
Li Na is certainly inventiveย with her excuses for her losing streak after her Roland Garros triumph this spring. The Chinese woman became the first Asian ever to win a Grand Slam at the French Open.
What she really meant:
โSports requires us (women) to be takers. But weโre givers (by nature)โjust ask my hubby and my opponents.โ
What she definitely didnโt:
โMartina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and Serena Williams are more than pleased with this explanation.โ
