Ben Roethlisberger Injury Update: Steelers Need QB to Play Well vs. Titans

Eric BowmanOct 4, 2011

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin expects Ben Roethlisberger to play on Sunday, despite the fact that he's battling through a sprained foot.

At 2-2, the Steelers have shown signs of weakness, and they desperately need a strong performance from Roethlisberger on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

Tomlin was on SportsCenter this morning and he said, "Ben had his foot x-rayed, MRI, thankfully nothing is broken there. It is a sprain, may limit him early portions of the week but we anticipate him being ale to participate in football game."

This comes shortly after a tweet from Gerry Dulac, who covers the Steelers for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

There's no doubt that Roethlisberger will be playing through a great deal of pain on Sunday, but the key is for him to avoid further injuring his foot.

You know the Titans will be gunning for that foot, hoping to take Roethlisberger out of the game. They may not admit it, but it's a part of the game.

It's a huge risk for the Steelers to start Roethlisberger, but because their other options are Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon, Roethlisberger has to deliver.

With Rashard Mendenhall's status uncertain for Sunday's game, Pittsburgh is counting on Roethlisberger to come through.

Starting the season 2-3 would be awful for the Steelers, and it would definitely crush their spirits moving forward.

The season is far from over, but this is clearly not how the Steelers wanted to begin the year. Roethlisberger will miss some practice this week, but do expect to see him on the field for Pittsburgh this Sunday.
