Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week 5: Jacoby Jones and 3 Players to Add

Andrea HangstOct 4, 2011

Every week, the waiver wire provides fantasy GMs with an opportunity to drastically improve their teams, with injuries, bye weeks and breakout performances elevating a player who was otherwise an afterthought into a starter.

For example, Jacoby Jones, wide receiver for the Houston Texans. Andre Johnson injured his hamstring in the team's Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, and despite a number of MRIs, the extent of the injury is unknown. Houston head coach Gary Kubiak said that, at this point, Johnson would miss anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and will be seeking second and third opinions from outside doctors.

Regardless, it is doubtful he will take the field on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders, and Jones will take his starting role. Kubiak is confident that Jones will be able to make a significant contribution as Johnson's replacement, and while the team will put more emphasis on its running game with Johnson out, Jones will see enough targets to make him a viable starter.

Jones' value hinges solely on Johnson missing time, however. So don't grab him thinking that he can continue to start for your team once Johnson returns.

Another useful injury replacement is Raiders running back Taiwan Jones. Michael Bush injured his ankle in Week 4, and while little is known about the extent of the injury now (expect news to come on Wednesday), Jones is worth the pickup, especially if you're in a deeper league or have serious needs at running back.

If Bush misses time, it will be the first chance for Jones—a preseason standout—to get meaningful regular season snaps. He's fast and talented, and would be a great complement to Darren McFadden, and his value is retained even when Bush is healthy. For owners of either Raiders back, Jones is the unquestioned handcuff.

Finally, a word to the wise: Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker is available in 24 percent of Yahoo! leagues—a criminally high number—and if one of those is yours, you need to grab him immediately.

Decker is quickly increasing his number of targets and is just about to be a legitimate rival to fellow receiver Brandon Lloyd. In his past three games, he's had five catches and four touchdowns, and this should probably be the last week that he isn't 90-or-more percent owned. He's a must-start, every week, whether in standard or PPR leagues.
