Fantasy Football Week 5: Cam Newton and 4 QBs You Must Start

Michael CahillOct 4, 2011

Those who think that a good running back is the key to a fantasy win must have missed Aaron Rodgers' 53-point performance last week.

The truth is, the right QB in the right game will having you breezing through your matchup. So here are some QBs to ride to victory in Week 5.

Cam Newton

Newton has been dazzling fantasy owners since Week 1, but most have been waiting for the other shoe to drop. The reality is that, while Newton is likely to come back to Earth, it won’t be against a team like the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints have given up an average of 24 points a game and have allowed quarterbacks such as Aaron Rodgers a chance to have big-time performances.

Cam Newton, as both a threat with his arm and his feet, should be able to find his way to the end zone more than once this weekend.

Aaron Rodgers

This might not be breaking news, but it should be pointed out that this is the same Aaron Rodgers that torched the Falcons in the playoffs last season.

He’s been on a roll with a historic performance against the Broncos that is already earning him the right to MVP chatter. The Falcons have been a bit of a mess this season on defense, and Rodgers should have no trouble putting up big numbers.

Kolb isn’t likely to be the starter on your fantasy team, but you should consider him this week.

The Cardinals are going up against a very laxed Minnesota secondary. They rank in the bottom 10 in passing yards allowed with 280 yards a game. In most leagues, that’s good for 11 points—and that’s without reaching the end zone.

Expect the Cardinals to try and spread the Minnesota defense to minimize what can be an effective pass rush. Spreading the defense means airing it out, and Kolb could have a big day.

This has more to do with Calvin Johnson than it does Matthew Stafford. The receiver, better known to some as Megatron, has been on a tear since the season started. Eight TDs in four games has him making fantasy owners very happy.

This week, he’ll be going up against the Bears secondary. While Charles Tillman, the Bears main corner, has been known to play Johnson well, Johnson is too big and strong, and Tillman is losing a step.

Johnson will have a big game, and Stafford’s fantasy numbers will reap the benefits.

If you’re smart, you’ll stick with these four QB’s to carry your team to victory.
