NFL Power Rankings Week 5: San Francisco 49ers and the 3 Most Surprising Teams

Chris TrapassoOct 3, 2011

The Detroit Lions coming back from 27-3 in the third quarter to win and the San Francisco 49ers mounting a 20-point second half comeback—no big deal.

These epic comebacks have become the theme of the 2011 NFL season and are being completed by some very surprising teams.

Let's take a look at which clubs are opening eyes across the country at this juncture.

San Francisco 49ers

Maybe Jim Harbaugh is on to something.

They haven't been flashy, but just beat the "Dream Team" in Philadelphia.

Alex Smith was bad in the first half yet had the resilience to raise his level of play when it mattered most, tossing two second half touchdowns.

If Frank Gore gets going, there's no telling how many games this team can win, especially because of the teams they'll play in their division.

The defense, lead by Patrick Willis, is more stingy than you think, and they are on the fast track to winning the NFC West.

Who would of thought?

Tennessee Titans

The acquisition of Matthew Hasselbeck seemed like a short-term option to help speed along the transition period for future franchise guy Jake Locker.

After a 3-1 start, Hasselbeck looks like the free agent signing of the year, and even without Kenny Britt, Tennessee's offense is humming.

Chris Johnson had his first 100-yard rushing game of the year, and, as usual, their defensive front is as stout as they come.

Picked by some to finish last in the AFC South, the Titans are slowly legitimizing themselves to the rest of the league.

Detroit Lions

The Lions came into the 2011 season with higher expectations than ever before.

But 4-0 high?

I'm not sure.

Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson are lighting scoreboards on fire (especially in the second half), and the defensive is very opportunistic.

Add in Ndamukong Suh and a beastly defensive front, and you've got one of the most surprising teams in the NFL today.
