Week 5 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: 10 Pickups Guaranteed to Save Your Season

Adam SpencerOct 3, 2011

So, you started your fantasy football season with a 1-3 or even an 0-4 record. Big deal.

There's still plenty of time to turn your season around, but you need to make some changes right away.

First, though, stop relying on players who aren't going to have an impact this season (I'm looking at you, Dallas Clark, Chad Ochocinco and DeAngelo Williams owners).

There are plenty of players available in more than 50 percent of Yahoo! Fantasy Football leagues who can help you turn your season around.

Let's take a look at 10 of those players now.

1. Jermaine Gresham, TE, Cincinnati Bengals

1 of 10

26 percent owned

Andy Dalton is no Cam Newton, but he's been a very capable quarterback so far this season.

Gresham has been the beneficiary of some of Dalton's good play.

He has 187 receiving yards and two touchdowns so far, and should continue to improve his stats as Dalton learns how to be an NFL quarterback.

2. Victor Cruz, WR, New York Giants

2 of 10

34 percent owned

With Steve Smith gone, someone needed to step up and be the third wide receiver behind Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham.

That someone is Victor Cruz, who has been great the last couple of weeks.

There are plenty of stats to go around in the Giants' offense, so Cruz should continue to be valuable for the rest of the season.

3. Danario Alexander, WR, St. Louis Rams

3 of 10

17 percent owned

The Rams have finally figured out how talented Alexander can be and have started targeting him more often.

He's a big, physical, speedy receiver who not only is a big-play threat, but a legitimate red zone target as well.

As long as he can stay healthy, he's someone you should have on your team.

4. Michael Bush, RB, Oakland Raiders

4 of 10

47 percent owned

Bush obviously isn't going to be as valuable as Darren McFadden, but he will steal some of McFadden's touchdowns.

He's also a decent pass-catcher out of the backfield.

As long as he's taking his fair share of Oakland's goal line carries, he'll have some fantasy value. Think of him as a poor man's Mike Tolbert.

5. James Casey, RB/TE, Houston Texans

5 of 10

18 percent owned

Casey has shown talent, versatility and athleticism in the Texans' offense this season.

And, even though he's stuck behind Owen Daniels on the depth chart, he'll continue to see plenty of playing time.

With Andre Johnson out, the Texans need someone to step up and replace some of his production. Casey should get a chance to do just that.

6. Stevan Ridley, RB, New England Patriots

6 of 10

13 percent owned

Ridley had a breakout game on Sunday, running for 97 yards and a touchdown in New England's victory.

He's probably the best prototypical running back on the Patriots roster, so he could be valuable the rest of the year.

Danny Woodhead is more of a threat in the passing game, so Ridley could earn a split-carry situation with BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

If he does, he'll have fantasy value in deeper leagues, and possibly as a flex position play in certain matchups.

7. Randall Cobb, WR, Green Bay Packers

7 of 10

20 percent owned

Cobb has already proven himself invaluable in the return game for the Packers, and now he's showing some flashes of brilliance on offense, too.

He had two catches for 75 yards on Sunday, showing some elusiveness after the catch as well.

With Aaron Rodgers throwing the ball to him, he has the potential to put up solid fantasy numbers any given week.

8. Dane Sanzenbacher, WR, Chicago Bears

8 of 10

Two percent owned

Sanzenbacher doesn't get a ton of receiving yards yet, but give him some time.

He's already developed into one of Jay Cutler's favorite targets in the red zone.

All the other receivers on the Bears' roster have been terrible this year, so it's only a matter of time until Sanzenbacher gets a bigger role in the offense.

9. Antonio Brown, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

9 of 10

26 percent owned

Brown hasn't found the end zone yet this year, but it's only a matter of time until he does.

He's had three straight games with over 65 receiving yards, though, so that makes him a fantasy threat.

If he finds the end zone in one of the upcoming games and has at least 65 yards, that's a 10-plus point fantasy performance.

10. Laurent Robinson, WR, Dallas Cowboys

10 of 10

Two percent owned

Robinson has been playing for the Cowboys for only two weeks now, but has already made an impact.

In his first game, he had 49 receiving yards. This week, he had 117 yards.

As long as Miles Austin and Dez Bryant are out and/or limited, Robinson will have significant value.

Even when Austin returns, Robinson looks like he could lock down the Cowboys' third wide receiver spot.
