Calvin Johnson is making a strong run at the MVP trophy. He currently leads the NFL in touchdown receptions. Johnson has always been an electric player, with good production. Many across the league feel that he is among the best receivers in the league.
However, he has received limited national attention, due to playing for the woeful Detroit Lions.
However, 2011 appears to be story for the Detroit Lions. Detroit is undefeated, looking like a team capable of making a strong playoff run. Their early season success has brought a ton of national attention.

Johnson has been a major part of the Lions success, continually making specular plays. His ability to make plays despite constantly facing double teams is very impressive. Johnson's week to week performance makes him a strong MVP candidate.
In order to be a legitimate MVP candidate, Johnson needs to continue to have weekly production. He needs the Lions to keep winning, in order for his play to have more of an impact. The more dynamic plays Johnson could make, the more attention he will receive.
Johnson will put up the stats necessary to win the award, he just needs to ensure he gets enough attention. He will continue to receive that attention if the Lions remain relevant.
The health of Matthew Stafford is also a major factor in Johnson's MVP run. Johnson needs Stafford to continue to develop and get him the football. It is also important that Stafford spreads the football around to other players.
If another receiving threat emerges, it would loosen coverage on Johnson.
The season is still young, but Johnson has planted himself in the MVP discussion. Today, we are talking about the undefeated Detroit Lions and Calvin Johnson an MVP candidate, what is happening in the NFL? It is actually nice to see the Detroit Lion fans' having a reason to celebrate.
