San Francisco 49ers Ride Alex Smith, Kendall Hunter and Frank Gore to Victory

Jesse ReedOct 2, 2011

In a stunning second half comeback the San Francisco 49ers upset the Philadelphia Eagles on the road.

The San Francisco 49ers were completely dominated in the first half by Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Alex Smith and the Niners offense came out with guns blazing to begin the second half. Kendall Hunter and Frank Gore both contributed huge runs to keep the chains moving. Hunter was also a big factor in the passing  game, catching two balls for 62 yards.

The defense played well all game long, with the front seven keeping the pressure on Michael Vick. The Eagles were able to move the ball well between the 20s, but the 49ers red zone defense was stellar.

Rookie Aldon Smith had a breakout performance and led the defense with one-and-a-half sacks. Michael Vick will surely be walking with a limp tomorrow.

Frank Gore was questionable to start the game, and I was among those who thought a bit of rest might do him good. But Gore had the first solid game of this season, and he had running lanes for the first time this season as well.

In addition to an improved running game, San Francisco boasted a robust passing attack today. Michael Crabtree had his first complete game of the year with five catches for 68 yards. Joshua Morgan also looked good and hauled in a 30-yard TD strike from Smith.

All in all, this game was fantastic for the San Francisco 49ers and their fans. We'll break things down in more detail in tomorrow's column.
