College Football Rankings: LSU and Alabama Further Proof Why SEC Best Conference
Let's go ahead and end the continual debate on who the best conference in America is.
It is, was, and likely always will be the SEC.
Yet for the doubters that remain, I offer up two simple reasons why. That would be LSU and Alabama.
To start, with all apologies to Oklahoma; Alabama and LSU are the two best teams in the country. It says a lot about a conference when they can boast the best team in the land.
What exactly does it say when they have the two best?
Right now, unless something crazy happens, either Alabama or LSU will be playing in the BCS Championship Game. For the team that loses their November 5 clash, a very strong case can be made that they should also be playing in that game if they finish the regular season with one-loss.
Then let's look at the middle of the pack teams this year. A list that includes the likes of South Carolina, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and Arkansas. That is a handful of very good football teams that would likely compete for every other conference title in the nation, with the possible exception of the Big 12 Conference.
Then throw in teams that are good, but have some ways to go still like Tennessee and Mississippi State, and top the bottom the SEC is the deepest, most talented conference in the nation. Period.
Over the past five years, eligible SEC bowl teams have a combined winning percentage of over .735 each year. That says a lot about the talent and depth throughout the conference.
Yet while all of these other teams can beat any other in the conference, the real strength of the SEC begins and ends with LSU and Alabama.. That's how strong these two programs really are.
It's the old case of not rebuilding, but reloading.
Just looking back at the past few years, shows another example of the dominance of the SEC.
With Auburn's championship win last season, it marked the fifth consecutive year that an SEC member has won a championship.
Speaking in terms of conferences, we are talking dynasty with the SEC.
In the 12 years that a BCS Champion has been crowned, the SEC has won seven of them. That's beyond impressive.
Yet I can throw all the numbers in the world out there, but you have to have strength at the top.
That's what the SEC has with both Alabama and LSU.
They have the chance to bring home the sixth straight championship for the SEC.
Further proof of why the SEC is the best conference in the game today.
