College Football Rankings: No. 3 Alabama Is the Best Team in the Nation

Luis BatlleOct 2, 2011

The Alabama Crimson Tide has been off to a promising start this season, proving its worth as one of the more talented teams in the nation. At 5-0, the Crimson Tide is 2-0 in SEC play and has beaten three Top 25 teams, beating Penn State, Arkansas and, most recently, Florida.

The big advantage this team has over most in college football? It has the most complete, dominant defense in both the SEC and all of college football. Through the first five games of the season, the team has allowed just 8.4 points a contest.

In the 38-10 victory over Florida, Alabama allowed just 229 total yards and just 15 rushing yards. The defense has been the staple of this football team since Week 1, as has been evident throughout the course of the season.

The team has allowed just 24 points in the last three contests, and two of those three games were against Arkansas and Florida.

On offense, Bama has continued its pound-the-ball ways, running efficiently and especially effectively through five games. The team averages 229.8 yards per game, a mark that ranks No. 13 in the nation. The running game is led by running back Trent Richardson, who has already recorded an impressive 622 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season.

Eddie Lacy has also another notable contributor for the team in the run game, with 397 yards and five touchdowns to his name.

Unlike LSU, the Alabama Crimson Tide is a more sound defensive team that wins games with its powerful running game. This type of play may be just the recipe to beat a team like LSU, as the Tide can control the clock and wear out LSU's offense.

It will be a matchup for the ages on Saturday Nov. 5, as the LSU Tigers will visit the Crimson Tide in what will likely be a game decided in the final moments. Expect Alabama to continue its success on the ground and pound LSU defensively, winning the game and putting themselves atop the BCS rankings.
