Todd Haley vs Matt Cassel: Should Fans Side with Chiefs QB or Head Coach?

John HickeyOct 2, 2011

Watching quarterback Matt Cassel and coach Todd Haley get into it on the Chiefs’ sideline in the second quarter against the Vikings, you have to wonder if these two are going to go their separate ways before too much longer.

Cassel didn’t like whatever it was that Haley had to say, and he took off his helmet and put on his baseball cap with all the enthusiasm of a petulant five-year-old being told he needs to eat broccoli.

The two didn’t stop barking at each other quickly, and Le'Ron McClain had to separate them, although Cassel wasn’t taken out of the game.

Although the Vikings were down just 7-6 at the time of the word play, Cassel’s numbers against Minnesota were miserable—five catches in 12 tries for 62 yards, so it wasn’t hard to see Haley’s point.

Through the first three weeks of the season Cassel was one of the most poorly rated quarterbacks in the game—one of the reasons the Kansas City season has begun with three consecutive losses.

Whatever his feelings were, Cassel came back out and hit on his next two passes for a combined 29 yards, and the Chiefs wound up getting their third field goal of the day in the final seconds of the first half to take a 9-7 halftime lead.

That’s the kind of production the Chiefs are going to need from him, if they’re going to get the season turned around.

It would help Cassel to no end if the Kansas City offensive line would keep the Vikings defense at bay; he’s been sacked twice already.

The question now is whether or not Cassel’s 2010 season was a fluke. He threw for over 3,100 yards and a career-best 27 touchdowns, while only throwing seven interceptions.

This year, he’s thrown just three touchdown passes, has been picked off five times and has a miserable QB rating of just 65.5
