Colin Kaepernick: Why 49ers Rookie QB Is Huge Upgrade over Alex Smith

The San Francisco 49ers have inserted rookie Colin Kaepernick into the lineup.  Kaepernick is replacing longtime starter Alex Smith.  It appears the adjustment was due to a minor injury to Alex Smith.  However, it will surely have some looking towards the future.

Kaepernick was selected in the second round out of Nevada.  He is considered as a project, but possesses a ton of physical talent.  While at Nevada, Kaepernick showed a ton of leadership while leading Nevada to several major victories.

There isn't a lot of people that see Alex Smith as a good NFL quarterback.  His coach hasn't shown much trust in his skills, as the offense is very conservative.  Smith is being asked to play the role of a game manager, keying in on avoiding mistakes.

Throughout his career, Smith has struggled to protect the football.  However, this season he has only thrown one interception. 

At some point, the 49ers are going to need someone to make plays.  Alex Smith doesn't appear capable of making plays down the field.  More importantly, he doesn't seem to have the confidence of his coaching staff.  Harbaugh wants to run the football, but a lack of a passing game has slowed the attack.

Kaepernick is a more exciting and big-play option.  He has the live arm and quickness to threaten the defense.  His ability to make plays with his feet will add another element to the 49ers offense.  His big-play potential would open things up for the running attack.

However, his limited experience in a pro-style offense will lead to mistakes. Kaepernick may be the more exciting player, but doesn't fit the mold of Jim Harbaugh's game plan.  Kaepernick may eventually get an opportunity, but it doesn't appear to becoming anytime soon.
