Tim Tebow: Will John Fox Bend to Broncos Fans' Demands to Play Tebow More?

David DanielsOct 2, 2011

John Fox continues to prove that he was the wrong hire for the Denver Broncos.

Fox refused to play Tim Tebow for the first three weeks of the season and the Broncos went just 1-2.  This past week though, an outcry from the Denver fan base to start Tebow caused Fox to break down.  According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the former Florida Gator legend will play quarterback on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

Tebow should’ve been getting spot action from Week 1.  In a division featuring the always talented San Diego Chargers and the rapidly rising Oakland Raiders, an early season hole is devastating.  Tebow could’ve been the difference against the Raiders and Tennessee Titans in the Broncos two losses.

Denver only lost by three points to the Raiders.  That was a game in which Kyle Orton turned the ball over twice and barely completed half of his passes.  The only touchdown he threw on the day happened to be too little, too late.

Against the Tennessee Titans, the Broncos had a 14-10 lead with the ball first-and-goal on the Tennessee 2-yard line.  Tebow could’ve easily punched it in, but Fox stuck with Orton, and Willis McGahee failed to bust through the Titans’ chain gang.

Fox’s stubbornness cost the Broncos the Titans game, and it didn’t look like his dead-set mindset of keeping the Heisman winner on the bench was going to change.

When the critics heated up though, his confidence caved in.  While Broncos fans get what they want in Tebow getting playing time, they should be disheartened that their coach actually listened to them.  This wasn’t simply the perfect matchup to get Tebow some action; it was actually the worst possible matchup.

Green Bay, as good as their secondary looks on paper, has surrendered the second most passing yards in the league this season.  Tebow’s critics stand behind Orton’s superior arm.  If his arm and passing ability is indeed superior, then Tebow should get no time whatsoever as Orton should be in position to shred the Packers’ secondary.

By taking Orton out of the game, that allows Green Bay’s No. 1 ranked run defense to play to their strength.  Not only that, but against Aaron Rodgers and company, the Broncos only chance of winning is in a shootout.  Benching Orton at random times messes up his rhythm.

Fox finally giving Tebow playing time isn’t a strategically inspired decision.  The Packers are one of the worst matchups for a quarterback like Tebow to play against.  Denver fans, congratulations, you're now in control of the robot that is John Fox.
