Sporting Gijon vs. Barcelona: The Champions Will Top La Liga Table

Nicholas GossOct 2, 2011

With a win against Sporting Gijon on Sunday, Barcelona will top the La Liga table, and overtake the current leaders, Malaga.

Gijon are playing quite poorly right now, and have drawn and lost four in their last give games. They have very little chance against the defending champions.

Lionel Messi is in amazing form (when is he not), scoring twice in Barcelona's 5-0 victory over BATE in the UEFA Champions League in midweek.

Messi leads La Liga with eight goals, and teammate Cesc Fabregas is tied for fifth with four scores.

Gijon will have a very difficult time scoring on the Barcelona back four, which will be bolstered by Gerard Pique, who has not started many games this season.

Pique is the best center back in the world, and is not only a brick wall on defense, he's dangerous on set pieces and has very good offensive skills.

Barcelona have allowed only four goals this season, while scoring 22. Gijon could be in for a scoring barrage today, as Barcelona have scored five goals three times in all competitions, including  5-0 wins against Villareal and Atletico Madrid, and an 8-0 win against Osasuna.

Barcelona have not started the season in perfect form, and dropping points twice in the form of two draws to Real Sociedad and Valencia, is unlike them this early in the season.

The Spanish champions will defeat Sporting Gijon on Sunday, and climb back to the top of the La Liga table.

They will overtake Malaga, and re-establish the aura of invincibility they typically carry with them into every stadium they play football.
