Florida vs. Alabama: Trent Richardson Deserves Heisman Trophy
There is no doubt in my mind that Alabama running back Trent Richardson is the best running back in college football.
The question now has to become: Is he the best overall player in college football?
Running backs are usually in the Heisman race, and there is no doubt that Richardson will be in the running when all is said and done.
In the end, unless a back has an outstanding year, the Heisman Trophy is normally going to go to a quarterback.
It's not the rule and it's certainly not a given, but more times than not a dominant quarterback is going to get the nod.
Andrew Luck of Stanford seems to be the early favorite for the honor, but I think he may be eclipsed by Richardson.
Right now, Richardson is on the better team, and one could easily argue that that the Tide have a much better chance at winning the national championship than the Cardinal do.
The question is: Is Trent Richardson the best player in the country?
This is what my colleague Danny Flynn said earlier this week on Bleacher Report:
"The powerful 5’11’’, 225-pound junior has looked nothing short of sensational in his first four games, racking up 441 yards on the ground and scoring 9 TDs.
"
Richardson has already solidified his status as one of the top offensive weapons in college football.
He has a blend of speed, strength and agility that very few other backs possess.
Stanford QB Andrew Luck may be the media darling Heisman favorite right now, but Richardson isn’t too far behind.
He’s going to be the workhorse bell-cow back for the Tide offense this season and he’s got a great chance to pile up some big numbers to impress the voters.
It’s doubtful that two Alabama backs can win the award just two years apart, but Richardson is definitely going to make a worthwhile run at it.
It's obviously on people's minds, so now all Richardson has to do is step up and prove to us that Alabama cannot win a national championship without him.
I think he is well on the way to doing so.
Before the Florida game, he was putting up some of the most impressive numbers in the country, and all he did was add to them.
He's the most important weapon on the Crimson Tide's roster, now all he has to prove that he's the most important weapon in the nation.
