College Football Rankings 2011: Texas A&M and 3 Ranked Teams with a Lot to Prove

Michael DixonOct 2, 2011

At this point of the season, there are some teams that are still overrated based on their preseason standing and expectations.

Most teams have been exposed at this point, but a few are still being propped up by smoke and mirrors. After seeing this week of action, there are some teams that have a lot to prove. As we'll come to find out, it's not just the teams that lost. Lack of defense will be a theme.

Baylor

How good is Baylor? Do they really have a team that can compete in the Big 12? Well, if their defense can't perform better than what we saw in Week 5 against Southern Methodist, then I can't exactly say that I like their chances.

A great effort by Robert Griffin III was completely wasted by Baylor's defense. But it wasn't just the defense.

Baylor turned the ball over three times, including an interception by Griffin that set up SMU's game-winning field goal.

The Bears have a lot to prove if they are going to be seen as a viable Big 12 threat.

Texas A&M

For the second week in a row, the Aggies got off to an incredibly hot start in a battle of top 25 teams against the Arkansas Razorbacks. For the second week in a row, the Aggies blew a big halftime lead.

I don't know if Texas A&M deserves to be ranked—actually, I don't know if they will be ranked when the new polls come out.

But in the Big 12, they are going to be playing some extremely potent offenses for the rest of the season. If they can't figure out how to at least contain these offenses, their own offense will be wasted.

Arkansas

Yeah, I can't exactly say that I came out of this game impressed with either team. Arkansas' defense needs to get a lot better if they are going to have any chance of competing in the SEC this year.

We saw last week against Alabama that Arkansas is a one-dimensional squad. Even though they won this game, I came away with a similar sentiment.

There were times where Arkansas just had no answer for the A&M offense. I know the Aggies offense is good, but the Razorbacks won't be putting up those kind of points in the SEC on a weekly basis. They have a lot to prove to be worthy of a high ranking.
