2011 MLB Playoffs: Zack Greinke to Start Game 2
The Milwakee Brewers have elected to start Zack Greinke on three days rest for the second start in a row.
At first this comes across as a setback for the Diamondbacks. Shaun Marcum was slated to start Game 2 in Milwaukee, but Marcum has an unusual stat split of a 4.81 ERA at home and a paltry 2.21 away.
Then the Diamondbacks were to face Greinke at Chase Field, who has more traditional splits of a 3.13 home ERA and 4.70 away.
Now the Brewers have lined it up so that the Diamondbacks will face the pitcher who is stronger at home at home and the one who is stronger away on the road.
However, three days rest is still only three days rest and this is the second time in a row Greinke has had to do this.
Any Diamondback fan will recall the now infamous Lou Pinella quote from 2007, "we're starting Zambrano on three days rest."
Needless to say that did not work out for Sweet Lou and the Cubs and the Diamondbacks advanced to the NLCS that year.
But this is a different team in a different year, so anything can happen.
In Greinke's only start against the Diamondbacks this season he went seven innings giving up five hits and two runs, with both runs being homers.
The fact that the Diamondbacks got two home runs off Greinke is a positive sign. While their lineup may not look like it, the Diamondbacks are a team that relies heavily on the homer.
You have to give Brewers manager Ron Roenicke credit for taking a chance, though.
This is what we waited all season for. Strategic moves, second guessing and a lot of postseason excitement.
