College Football Picks Week 5: 3 Ranked Teams That Will Lose This Week

Michael MillOct 1, 2011

College football is like no other major sporting event in the United States.

Every week matters.

In the NFL you can lose eight games and still make the playoffs. In baseball, losing 50 games is normal. In basketball, even the best teams have double-digit losses.

In college football, one loss is enough to ruin an entire season.

Here are three ranked teams that are going to fall victim to losses this weekend.

No. 12 Florida Gators

If Tim Tebow was still the Gators quarterback this may be a different story. He's not, and John Brantley isn't going to be able to carry Florida to victory over Alabama this weekend.

The Crimson Tide have one of the best defenses in the nation. Some are questioning if it's the best college football has seen in recent years.

Either way, they are really good.

Add in a ridiculous duo in the rushing attack between Trent Richardson and Eddie Lacy and you have a formula for success.

The Gators have a good defense as well, but it won't be enough to get them a win.

No. 11 Virginia Tech Hokies

Last week, the Clemson Tigers took out the No. 11 Florida State Seminoles. This week they will take out the No. 11 Virginia Tech Hokies.

The Hokies, much like Florida State, rely heavily on a strong defense to win games.

As we saw last week, this Clemson offense is something special. Honestly, I wasn't a believer until I saw them manhandle the Seminoles the way they did last week.

The Hokies may be able to slow them down, but the Tigers won't be stopped.

Chances are they won't slow them down enough. The Virginia Tech offense isn't known to put up many points.

No. 8 Nebraska Cornhuskers

Nebraska is facing Wisconsin in their first ever Big Ten conference game this weekend.

Nebraska has looked like a good team early in the season. They have run the ball well with Taylor Martinez and Rex Burkhead.

However, they are playing the third ranked defense in the nation in terms of scoring. On top of that, they are allowing just 2.9 yards per carry for opposing offenses.

Combine this with a potent offense ranked sixth in scoring and it spells disaster for the Cornhuskers.
