Clemson vs Virginia Tech: Last-Minute Spread Info and Predictions

Andrew KulhaOct 1, 2011

No. 13 Clemson and No. 11 Virginia Tech meet up in a game that features two teams with unlimited potential and very lofty goals.

The Tigers are coming into the game 4-0 and feature two big-time wins against Auburn and Florida State. They feature an explosive and quick offense and a play-making defense, and they deserve every bit of the hype that they have received coming into the game.

The Hokies are playing host knowing that this is arguably the biggest game of their schedule. They as well have a 4-0 record, but this is their first conference game.

They've also had a weak schedule, especially when comparing to the schedule the Tigers have played.

This will be a huge test for both teams and will determine their long-term fate in the ACC.

What's At Stake

This is the biggest game on both teams schedule right now. Both Clemson and Virginia Tech are nursing undefeated records, and they need to keep them that way in order to have a shot at the ACC title.

This will be the first big test of Tech's season, while it's yet another run through the gauntlet for Clemson. It will be interesting to see how they each react to the moment.

Last-Second Injury News

Clemson: Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins probable (hamstring), punter Dawson ZImmerman probable (knee), running back D.J. Howard probable (hamstring)

Virginia Tech: Guard Dale Davis questionable (foot), wide receiver Jerrett Boykin questionable (hamstring), wide receiver Dyrell Roberts doubtful (arm), defensive tackle Kwamaine Battle out for season (knee).

Key Matchup

If Virginia Tech can stop Tigers' quarterback Tajh Boyd than they will cruise to an easy win. The problem is that it's much easier said than done. Boyd has passed for 1,255 yards 13 touchdowns and only one interception so far.

Sleepers To Watch

Clemson's junior running back Andre Ellington is going to be a key to this game. Every now and then the Tigers are going to want to switch it up and establish the run, so Ellington is going to have to be effective.

Wide receiver Danny Coale needs to step up for the Hokies. Their running game is stellar, but if they want to keep up with the Tigers he needs to score at least once. He only has one touchdown on the year and 18 catches.

Prediction

Both teams are good, but I think Clemson is far to explosive. Virginia Tech will hang in, but the play-making ability of Tajh Boyd will eventually take over the game.
