Liverpool FC Loan out Young Starlet Jonjo Shelvey to Blackpool

Joseph ZuckerSep 30, 2011

Liverpool have officially loaned out English midfielder Jonjo Shelvey to Championship side Blackpool.

Only 19 years old, the midfielder arrived at Anfield last season from Charlton in a move worth an initial £1.7 million. The fee could rise with performance and appearance bonuses.

The loan has been rumored for months. It was reported that a term of the Charlie Adam transfer would be Shelvey moving to Blackpool for a season. Rather than lasting the entire season, the loan will expire on December 31, 2011.

Shelvey appeared in 15 matches for Liverpool last season before a knee injury in February essentially ended his season. In those cameos, he showed a lot of promise and has quickly become one of the club's best young stars.

This is a good move for everyone involved: Shelvey, Liverpool and Blackpool. There was a worry of what would happen to the young Englishman's development with the summer arrivals of Adam, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson.

Certainly Shelvey's development would be stunted by sitting on the bench. The midfield is already crowded, even with the departures of Alberto Aquilani and Raul Meireles. Now, Steven Gerrard is returning from injury, which would have put Shelvey deeper in the pecking order.

This has to be welcome news for any Liverpool supporter.

Shelvey needs to playing every day, and he is not going to get that at Liverpool. Ideally, it would be great for him to move to a Premier League outfit so he faces some of the best competition in the world on a weekly basis.

He's good, but he isn't at that level yet.

A move to Blackpool is probably the best possible scenario. Ian Holloway loves to put his teams on the attack, and the midfield is a crucial part of that. Shelvey will hopefully have the opportunity to be the kind of player that Adam was for the Seasiders last season.

With Liverpool loaning out Shelvey, hopefully the club can loan out some other young players, as well. Former manager Rafael Benitez began overhauling the youth system toward the end of his tenure, and it's starting to bear fruit.
