Vikings vs. Chiefs: Why This Is Kansas City's Best Shot at Winning

Farzin VousoughianJun 7, 2018

There are five winless teams going into Week 4. When this week is in the books, at least one of those five teams will walk away with a win.

The Minnesota Vikings (0-3) will visit the Kansas City Chiefs (0-3) this Sunday.

For the Kansas City Chiefs, this is the perfect opportunity to pick up a win at home.

Donovan McNabb Is Struggling

1 of 4

Although he may be aging, it is hard to believe that Donovan McNabb is having a difficult time getting acclimated with his new team.

The Vikings are currently ranked 29th in the league in the passing game while the Chiefs rank first in the league in interception yards returned.

Tamba Hali and Wallace Gilberry did a good job of limiting Philip Rivers last week. If those two apply pressure on McNabb, it may result in McNabb turning the ball over, which could put the Chiefs in good field position if they carry over their success from last week.

The Vikings Can’t Play in the Second Half

2 of 4

In their first three games, the Vikings have blown out their opponents in the first half 54-7. However, opposing teams have managed to bounce back in every game and blow out the Vikings in the second half and overtime 67-6.

Obviously every game has been a tale of two halves for the Vikings, as they find themselves on the bottom end of the spectrum.

The Chiefs were blown out in their first two games by a score of 89-10, but put up a fight in the second half of in Week 3 against the San Diego Chargers.

If the Vikings hold an early three-possession lead going into the locker room at halftime, don’t award them the victory just yet. Unlike the Detroit Lions and the Buffalo Bills, the Vikings are not capable of playing 60 minutes of football.

After failing last week and throwing an interception on a screen play to a defender who was being blocked, Matt Cassel will have a shot at redemption this week to help his team to win a game in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings Cannot Defend Against the Pass

3 of 4

While the Vikings have one of the best pass rushers in the game in ex-Chief Jared Allen, there isn’t a strong supporting cast, as the Vikings rank 29th in the league against the pass.

Can Cassel lead his football team for four complete quarters? He has a big opportunity to silence the critiques and possibly remove the Chiefs from the “Suck 4 Luck” campaign with a win.

This is another chance for Cassel to connect with Dwayne Bowe against a weak Vikings defense.

Bowe had his first career victory against the Vikings in style after the Chiefs were down 10-0 in Week 3 of 2007 at Arrowhead. Bowe caught the eventual game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.

With the way the Vikings have played in the second half this season, Cassel and Bowe might be destined to become the heroes of the game.

The Chiefs Are at Home

4 of 4

With the Chiefs hosting an 0-3 team early in the season while the weather is still warm, this may be the last time they have a big crowd at Arrowhead Stadium this year.

After seeing the first three games, fans have already outlined their expectations for the Chiefs this year. If the Chiefs lose, this could be the last straw for the fans and could lead to at least one game receiving a blackout.

This is a rare opportunity for the Chiefs to pick up a win against a team that is just as bad, record wise, at home.
