Cam Newton: Panthers QB Wins Rookie of Month, Will Win Rookie of the Year

Cam Newton unsurprisingly won the Rookie of the Month award for throwing up eye-popping numbers and getting his first win.

In his first game on an NFL football field (on the road, no less) in distant Arizona, Newton threw for 422 yards and two touchdowns to just one interception in a loss to the Cardinals.

You just knew he was going to be special after that performance.

He followed it up with a 432-yard, one touchdown and three-interception performance against the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. Newton had his team leading at halftime, but eventually lost.

The Panthers quarterback had a down statistical week against the Jaguars in Week 3, but got his first win in the midst of a monsoon in Carolina.

According to Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com: "Sam Bradford (October and November 2010) and Tim Couch (October 1999) are the only other quarterbacks drafted No. 1 overall to be named NFL Rookie of the Month and Newton is the only one to earn the award in his first month of play."

Sam Bradford ran away with the Rookie of the Year award last year and I think Cam is going to do the same this season.

If he continues to put up incredible stats like he has and wins a few games along the way, he is a shoo-in for the award.

Who could even possibly catch him?

Andy Dalton looks good, but he’s never going to put up the stats that Cam is and he will have a comparable number of wins.

If he becomes a bigger part of the Saints offense and starts ripping off big runs and scoring TDs, Mark Ingram could be the biggest threat to Newton’s campaign.

However, the way that the Saints are playing right now, I just don’t see it happening.

The smart money is on Newton winning a few more Rookie of the Month awards and eventually taking home the hardware for the year.
