NFL Picks Week 4: 2 Underdogs Sure to Cover the Spread

Jeff GrantSep 28, 2011

Week 4 of the 2011 NFL regular season is upon us and all teams are in action once again before bye weeks start kicking in next week.

Underdogs are currently 24-21-3 ATS on the season, including a 9-6-2 ATS mark for home teams that are given points by the oddsmaker.

Let's take a look at two teams in this role that will have you cashing at the betting window on Sunday.

New York Jets at Baltimore Ravens

1 of 2

The New York Jets were unable to hold a 17-7 second-quarter lead last week, dropping a 34-24 contest to the Oakland Raiders as three-point road favorites.

That result has provided line value for this AFC clash, which will also allow the Jets to improve upon their 13-6 ATS record as an underdog.

Head coach Rex Ryan's squad has been favored in the first three games this season, but is 7-1 straight-up and ATS when getting four points or less in a game.

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has also provided bettors with spread victories in 10 of 16 chances as an underdog in his two-plus seasons in the NFL.

It's also important to note that the franchise has dropped consecutive games just once since Nov. 22, 2009.

Pick:  New York Jets (+3.5)

Buffalo Bills at Cincinnati Bengals

2 of 2

Momentum is a powerful force in the National Football League, but so is emotion.

The Buffalo Bills have experienced both in the early stages of the season, which has directly led to a 3-0 record, including a 34-31 win over the New England Patriots as seven-point home underdogs.

Just a week earlier, Buffalo scored 35 points in the final 30 minutes to complete another comeback, edging the Oakland Raiders by a 38-35 margin.

What will happen this week?

The AFC East division leader will come out as flat as a two-liter bottle of coke that is left open for seven days.

Cincinnati is one of the worst favorites in all of football, but land as home underdogs due to the late-game heroics of Sunday's opponent.

The Bengals are a money-grabbing 7-2 ATS in their last nine tries when getting points at Paul Brown Stadium.

That's enough for me.

Pick:  Cincinnati Bengals (+3.5)
