Redskins' Statistics Reveal a Team the St. Louis Rams Can Beat

Doug ZerjalSep 28, 2011

This Sunday, the St. Louis Rams host the Washington Redskins. The game is obviously huge for the Rams as they still look for their first win. The Redskins are 2-1 and coming off a tough loss to Dallas on Monday Night Football. A closer look at the Redskins’ numbers reveals an average offensive and defensive team.

The Redskins feature an unspectacular offense that is ranked 15th in the NFL at 361.7 yards per game. Led by quarterback Rex Grossman, the Redskins rank 15th in the league in passing yards (258.0 ypg) and 12th in the league in rushing (103.7 ypg).

Grossman has played solidly thus far. Plagued by turnovers throughout his career, Grossman has a five touchdown to three interception ratio. Grossman believes his wide receiving core to be the best in football. While the Redskins have solid veterans in Fred Davis and Santana Moss, they are far from the best in in the NFL. This might be an area the Rams could exploit Sunday.

The running game for Washington is decent, led by back Tim Hightower. Hightower’s team high 209 yards, combined with the running of rookie Roy Helu (Nebraska), has allowed Grossman a chance to make plays with defenses concerned with the running game.

The Redskins' offensive line is a an area of concern. The blitzing defense the Rams showed against the Giants could have success against a line that has allowed eight sacks and 20 hits on their quarterback so far in 2011.

Defensively, the Redskins have played well, ranking 11th in the NFL against the rush (97.7 ypg) and ranking 15th versus the pass (240.3 ypg). They have only surrendered two passing touchdowns this season.

To sum up, the Rams need to beat Washington. With a tough schedule upcoming, the Rams must win to change the momentum of their season. The Redskins have played well, but do not outmatch the Rams from a talent level standpoint.
