Tom Brady: Does Patriots QB Target Wes Welker at Expense of Others?

Tom EdringtonSep 28, 2011

Woody Hayes once said that when you pass the football, "three things can happen, and two of them are bad."

Tom Brady doesn't care.

Brady's got the football in the air so often this year, it might be tempted to grow feathers.

The 2-1 Patriots have 1,621 yards of offense, and 1,313 of that comes from chucking the ball.

The chief beneficiary of Brady's propensity to pass is Wes Welker, the poster-boy for 5'9" free agents who are simply too short to make it in the NFL.

Welker's got himself 31 catches for 458 yards—at this rate, he would easily pass Marvin Harrison's NFL record 143 catches in 2002 and Jerry's Rice's 1,848 yards receiving back in 1995.

All this Brady-to-Welker charisma has to make you wonder if he's looking for anyone else? Does TB simply have eyes for WW?

Welker's got more than Deion Branch and Aaron Hernandez combined, and is close to doubling Rob Gronkowski's 17.

Is Welker the only guy on the field open?

The absolute forgotten man in this Brady-to-Welker hit parade is the dancing star—Chad Ochocinco. There was so much talk when New England signed him, then more talk he'd not even make the final roster. Now we know why.

Ochocinco is simply cinco-non-grata when it comes to getting looks from Brady.

He's not the only one who has to be feeling left out in this Brady-Welker love-fest. Didn't New England used to run the football?

If you live up north then you know what's coming, and that can be some really rotten winter weather. So when the snow falls and the winds howl, will Brady and Welker still be up to these record-chasing shenanigans?

Consider also—if you love everything about these Patriots—what might happen if Welker were injured?

Would that be the end of Happy Days as we know them?

Let's face it—these first three games have been phenomenal for the Brady-Welker combination.

But it seems like common sense and perhaps the Hoodie (Bill Belichick already knows it) that if this is a Super Bowl contender, the circus is going to have to come up with another act so it can be—at the least—a two-ring circus.
