Mario Manningham Injury: Should Fantasy Owners Start or Sit WR in Week 4?

Ryan PhillipsSep 28, 2011

New York Giants receiver Mario Manningham has been cleared to practice after sitting out last weekend's game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a concussion. It is likely that Manningham will practice on a limited basis this week as he recovers.

Barring a setback, I think Manningham will play this week. However, it's not clear what kind of an impact he'll have. Backup Victor Cruz had a big day against the Eagles with Manningham out, and he is sure to get more looks this weekend against the Arizona Cardinals. In fact, thanks to Cruz's breakout weekend, the Giants may move Manningham into the slot in three-wide sets in order to utilize Cruz's playmaking ability on the perimeter.

Through the first two weeks, Manningham had seven catches for 105 yards and no touchdowns. You probably shouldn't have been starting him before the concussion. Therefore, considering this is his first week back after that head injury, it's probably not advisable to have him in your lineup even if you are seriously scraping the bottom of the barrel at the wide receiver spot.

Over the past two seasons, Manningham has been a nice No. 2 target for Giants quarterback Eli Manning. In 2009, the Michigan product had 57 catches for 822 yards and five touchdowns. Last season, he upped his production even further, snagging 60 passes for 944 yard and nine touchdowns.

The Giants are likely to rely on Manningham a lot this season, but in his first week back from a concussion, it's probably best to take a "wait and see" approach with the fourth-year wideout.
