Mark Henry Deserves a WWE Championship Match After Hell in a Cell 2011

Tom BrewerJun 7, 2018

This Sunday at Hell in the Cell 2011, John Cena, CM Punk and Alberto del Rio will compete in the first ever triple-threat Hell in the Cell match for the WWE Championship.

WWE COO Triple H created this historic contest because Punk never received a rematch against del Rio after SummerSlam 2011. Del Rio invoked his rematch clause after losing the championship to Cena at Night of Champions 2011.

No matter who wins the WWE Championship match this Sunday, the WWE will face an interesting question on Monday Night Raw: Who should be the No. 1 contender for the WWE title?

No combination of Cena, Punk and del Rio will suffice.

The WWE fan base has tired of del Rio. Despite an exciting and violent assault of his Hell in the Cell opponents at the end of last Monday’s Raw, the average WWE fan is bored with Alberto del Rio.

The fans find him slow and predictable in the ring, and the WWE Universe is as tired of hearing about Alberto del Rio’s destiny as NFL fans are tired of hearing about Peyton Manning’s neck.

While a reprisal of a feud between CM Punk and John Cena would promise for killer promos and tremendous in-ring action, the WWE Universe has seen this battle play out twice since July.

Both matches were compelling, but if the WWE continues to run out the same main event each pay-per-view, fans will lose interest.

One sequel is a rematch, too many sequels is a lack of creativity. Rocky II was excellent; Rocky V was pathetic.

Furthermore, Cena is primed for a new rival and, win or lose, Punk is embroiled in a captivating rivalry with Kevin Nash, John Laurinitis and anyone else involved in the conspiracy.

These two need not take each other on for quite some time. So who should be the No. 1 contender for the WWE Championship after Hell in a Cell?

Mark Henry.

Mark Henry is the hottest heel going in the WWE right now, and he is the destructive villain wrestling fans have waited for since Brock Lesnar retired.

The World’s Strongest Man toppled the Great Khali, Kane and the Big Show. Henry brutalized Ezekiel Jackson and Vladimir Koslov. His chilling threats against Jim Ross stunned WWE fans worldwide.

Then, he trounced Jerry Lawler. A king hasn’t been beaten like that since the Dallas Mavericks shut down Lebron James.

In short, Mark Henry is on a terrifying roll. A climax to that roll would be a match against whomever emerges from Hell in the Cell with the WWE Championship to unify the WWE’s two major titles.

The WWE shows no indication of stopping its “Supershows” and if that is the case, it no longer makes sense to have two champs.

If Henry and the WWE Champion unify the World Heavyweight Championship, this new champion could compete on both brands.

This would be no different than now as Cena and Henry have regularly appeared on both Raw and Smackdown.

Competition would increase among contenders as the entire roster vies for one belt instead of two. The creative team could focus on fostering more rivalries instead of justifying title challengers.

Hell in a Cell promises to be a thrilling, brutal event. Each match inside the “satanic structure” promises to be unforgettable and unpredictable.

Just as unpredictable is who will be next in line for the WWE Championship. Whoever survives the first ever triple-threat Hell in a Cell match should look over his shoulder for the World’s Strongest Man, Mark Henry.
