PGA Tour Caddy Joe LaCava Switches to Tiger Woods' Bag
Joe LaCava’s decision to leave Dustin Johnson’s bag and offer his services to Tiger Woods adds more drama to the caddy yard than we have seen in some time on the PGA Tour.
It is a fact that for professional golfers and their caddies, golfing is big business, and every player and caddy is trying to maximize income for himself and his family.
Joe LaCava and Fred Couples had a long and profitable relationship on the PGA Tour. As Freddie moved on to the lesser paying purses of the Champions Tour, Joey had to move onto a more lucrative caddy arrangement.
Enter Dustin Johnson, a young player needing the cool head and wise counsel of a veteran caddy; it seemed a perfect match for the veteran caddy. They won a tourney together, a playoff event even. Truly a match made in heaven? Not so fast, my friend.
Dustin is young, single, wants to travel the world, drink a little French wine, maybe drive on the autobahn, see Europe, and play some events on the Euro Tour. Joey has a couple of teenage girls at home. He's been there, done that and would rather stay near home, thank you very much.
For that reason, he reached out to Tiger Woods’ management team and asked if he could apply for the job as Tiger’s main looper. No one plays fewer events than Tiger, and when he does play, he normally brings in big money. Should be a perfect situation for daddy LaCava.
Just one slight problem with this scenario, however, Tiger hasn't been playing that great lately, what with all the injuries, pesky fire hydrant thing, swing changes, etc, etc.
I hope it all works out well for Joe. He is truly one of the good guys and great all-time caddies on the PGA Tour. He has made a ton of money over the years but hey, look what college costs today. A guy’s gotta do what a guy’s gotta do.
He may be able to get the yardages, carry the bag, and pull the right club. And this is a huge BUT, he does not swing the sticks and I’m not sure even he can fix Tiger’s screwed-up head.
Good luck with that, Joey.
