NFL: Philadelphia Eagles "Dream Team" a Vick-Tim of a Nightmare Beginning

Mike MoraitisSep 27, 2011

The Philadelphia Eagles were supposed to be the "Dream Team" and have a dream season.  After only three games into the 2011 NFL season, the Eagles' season is becoming a nightmare.

When the Eagles were the most active team during the offseason in the free-agent market, they didn't envision beginning the season 1-2.

This wasn't supposed to happen.

But now after a little dose of reality handed down to them by the New York Giants, the Eagles find themselves reeling after losing to a team they had no business losing to.

Even worse, their new franchise quarterback, Michael Vick, has sustained two different injuries in the past two weeks, leaving his future in doubt.  Not being able to take snaps sufficiently, Vick's status for this Sunday is up in the air.

On top of Vick's injury uncertainties, the Eagles have an offensive line that is not protecting its quarterback.  That is a huge problem for Philly who can't hope to have a successful offense if there is nobody blocking.

Funny how after all the talent they added, some unnecessary at that, the Eagles find themselves struggling with the purest fundamentals of the game: blocking.

The Eagles overlooking that simple aspect of the game may be their ultimate downfall.  Defenses around the league are taking notes that they can pressure the Eagles weak offensive line and if successful, can take Vick out of the game if they hit him hard enough as Vick continues to battle injuries.

As far as Vick is concerned, his future for the rest of this season is bleak at best.  If the last two weeks are evidence of anything, it's that if Vick continues to take extra hits in or out of the pocket, he will suffer more injuries.

Not having Vick on the field due to injuries is not what the Eagles had in mind when they signed him a to franchise quarterback-type contract earlier in the year.

The Eagles better start blocking or expect to keep losing.

I would bet know that Vince Young was wishing he'd kept the "Dream Team" comment to himself.  It's always hard to live up to the expectations of a team that never lost.  There's no doubt Young and the Eagles can kiss that little title goodbye.
