Terrell Owens: Why the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears Should Target TO

Adam WellsJun 4, 2018

Terrell Owens is not quite ready to return to the NFL after undergoing knee surgery in the offseason. But when he is ready to make his return, there are a number of teams that could use the 38-year-old wide receiver’s services.

Two teams that desperately need the troubled wide receiver are the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears.

Let’s start with the Vikings. I know the situation between Owens and Donovan McNabb was contentious, to say the least, when the two were teammates in Philadelphia. But that feud was six years ago, and the two men can benefit from a reunion in Minnesota.

McNabb is on his last legs right now. If you just look at his stats, particularly in the last two games, he looks OK. But when you dig deeper, you realize that he is not holding up well as the game moves along.

McNabb has been starting games strong, but as the game moves along he fades down the stretch. This has contributed to the Vikings blowing two big fourth-quarter leads in the last two games.

Adding an explosive playmaker like Owens will keep the offense playing at a high level for all four quarters of the game. They are falling far behind the other three teams in the NFC North and must find some way to salvage this season.

Chicago has been in desperate need of a wide receiver for years. Devin Hester is an exciting special teams player, but he is not cut out to play wide receiver. The less said about the Roy Williams acquisition, the better.

Running back Matt Forte is the team’s best receiver, and they have become so reliant on him as a pass catcher that he is not able to get consistent carries out of the backfield. (Plus, the offensive line is so bad that Forte would not be able to break a big run anyway.)

Jay Cutler gets criticized for a lot of the decision that he makes, and that is a valid criticism, but it’s not like the front office has done anything to help him out.

Owens is not the receiver that he used to be, but at 38 years old and coming off major knee surgery, he is still a better option than anyone the Bears have right now.

This team has playoff aspirations after winning the NFC North last season, and they need to find playmakers to make the offense more explosive if they want to compete with the better teams in the conference.

There is no definitive return date for Owens, but in a recent interview with The Sporting News he said that it is “just a matter of time.”

When the time does finally arrive, the Vikings and Bears should at least call him to see if he is interested in playing for them.

The ball is in their court. They just have to be willing to take the leap.
