NFL Picks: 5 Underdogs Who Are Lead-Pipe Locks To Cover in Week 4

Dominic KopekJun 6, 2018

Every week Vegas makes mistakes labeling some teams as underdogs when they are clearly the better team.

The following underdogs won last week:

  • Kansas City Chiefs easily covering their 14
  • Indianapolis Colts easily covering their 11
  • New York Giants easily covering their 8
  • Denver Broncos covering their 7
  • Buffalo Bills covering their 7
  • Washington Redskins covering their 3.5
  • Seattle Seahawks covering their 3
  • Oakland Raiders easily covering their 2.5
  • Cleveland Browns covering their 1.5
  • San Francisco 49ers covering their 1

This week will be no different as there are clearly five underdogs that will easily cover the spread.

Detroit Lions

1 of 5

It is hard for me to see the Detroit Lions going down in Week 4.  The opening line for this game is the Dallas Cowboys favored by 2.5 points.  The home team automatically gets three so technically the Lions are actually favored in hindsight.

The 6'5" Calvin Johnson should have an easy day matching up with Dallas' smaller corners as Terrence Newman and Mike Jenkins both measure out at 5'10".

It should be jump balls all day and Calvin should keep his pace of 32 touchdowns as he will get a few again and help the Lions convincingly beat the Dallas Cowboys.

Oakland Raiders

2 of 5

After a convincing victory over the New York Jets in Week 3, the Oakland Raiders are still underdogs at home against the New England Patriots as they are getting 4.5 points.

The Black Hole is always a tough place to play and Tom Brady looked human last week, throwing four interceptions in a losing effort to their division rival Buffalo Bills.  This week wont be any easier.

After allowing Fred Jackson to total 161 yards, Darren McFadden is licking his chops.  Run DMC is playing like a man possessed as he gouged the stingy Jets run defense for 171 yards on the ground and he will continue his dominance this week and lead the Raiders to easily cover the 4.5 points that New England is giving the Raiders.

Carolina Panthers

3 of 5

Cam Newton had possibly his worst game as a pro, yet he led his Carolina Panthers to their first victory in Week 3.  The weather had a big part of the lack of play-making ability against Jacksonville so in Week 4 Cam should be back to his old self.

The Chicago Bears are clearly a pass first team, they only ran the ball nine times last week, and that plays right into Carolina's strengths as they are 15th in passing defense and 25th in rushing defense.

Right now Chicago is giving the Panthers 6.5 points and every game Carolina has played in has been decided by seven or less points.  This week will not be any different and it will be a close one with the Panthers covering.

Tennessee Titans

4 of 5

After facing a few of the better run defenses in the league, Chris Johnson will look to get back on track this week against the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns currently rank in at 29th against the run, giving up almost 130 yards a game.  This was against the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins who, despite having decent rushers, have nobody with the talent CJ2K has.

After the loss of Kenny Britt for the season, Chris Johnson and the Titans offense will shift to a more conservative approach and look to getting back to pounding the ball this week.

Cleveland is currently the favorite giving up one point to Tennessee and with this rushing attack bound to come alive in Week 4, I don't see how the Titans lose.

Washington Redskins

5 of 5

After a disappointing loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins will look to rebound against the lowly St. Louis Rams in Week 4.  As this spread is even, Washington is not technically an underdog, but I don't see this ending up being a close game.

The Rams clearly have problems with multiple aspects of their team as they have lost all their games by double digits, with the last one a blowout of 30 points by the Baltimore Ravens.  The Rams Week 5 bye couldn't come any sooner and the Redskins will look to deal a knockout punch before their break.

Tim Hightower and Roy Helu should have a field day as the Rams are giving up almost 175 yards a game on the ground and they will help the Redskins run away with this victory.

So there ya go, get your bets in and watch these underdogs prevail in Week 4.
